Milwaukee was once considered the print shop of the nation, producing everything from letterhead, food labels, posters, and billboards. Join Sarah Finn, Special Collections and Archives Librarian at Milwaukee Public Library, for a presentation about the Gugler Lithographic Company. Founded in 1878 by German immigrant Henry Gugler and his two sons, Julius and Henry Jr., the firm gained a national audience when they landed Pabst Brewing Company as a client. Gugler printed Pabst’s beer labels, stationery, and promotional materials such as posters and show cards. By World War II, Gugler was one of Wisconsin’s largest operating printing companies, producing materials for a local and national clientele. In 1966, the Gugler Lithographic Company was acquired by Journal Communications, and by the end of the 20th century the printing firm ceased to exist.
Milwaukee Public Library is proud to have 1,136 posters printed by the Gugler Company, and a set of Gugler sample books dating from 1891 through 1944. These materials can be viewed by appointment at Central Library. This presentation will include numerous images from the Gugler collection and there will be examples on display for attendees to view after the presentation.
