Tamara Thomsen discusses I Live Underwater, the posthumous memoir of diving legend, deep-sea explorer, and Milwaukeean Max Gene Nohl.
The Milwaukee Public Library welcomes Wisconsin Historical Society Maritime Archaeologist Tamara Thomsen to discuss the newly published memoir of Max Nohl, a larger-than-life thrill seeker and treasure hunter who revolutionized deep-sea diving. Recounting harrowing experiences with tangled air-hoses, hungry sharks, and painful cases of the bends, Nohl’s vivid narrative shows how his unquenchable thirst for adventure propelled him to transcend fear and become one of the field’s great innovators—shattering the diving record in 1937 as the first person to dive deeper than 400 feet. I Live Underwater recounts Nohl’s early passion for the undersea world and his many groundbreaking contributions to the diving industry, including inventing the first self-contained diving suit, co-founding Milwaukee-based diving equipment company, DESCO, and developing early underwater film and photography techniques for Hollywood. After Nohl’s sudden death in 1960 in a car accident, his nearly complete memoir was donated to the Milwaukee Public Library Archives. Now published for the first time ever, I Live Underwater offers a thrilling story of underwater exploration and a fitting tribute to the achievements of this depth-defying pioneer and adventurer.
Tamara Thomsen, who wrote the foreword to I Live Underwater, is a Maritime Archaeologist with Wisconsin Historical Society's Maritime Preservation and Archaeology program. Her research has resulted in the nomination of more than seventy submerged sites to the National Register of Historic Places. She has received awards from the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Preservation Society, and in 2014 she was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame.
Books will be for sale at the event from Boswell Book Company.
