Join us in the Richard E and Lucile Krug Rare Books room for a presentation on the Milwaukee Handicraft Project. Lois Quinn will use MPL rarities, archival materials and historic photos to describe how a group of young art teachers in Milwaukee County created WPA jobs for nearly 5,000 women during the Great Depression making educational toys, dolls, costumes, quilts, rugs, draperies, and other products for the county orphanage, hospital, WPA nurseries, and schools. Lois’ research on the WPA Handicraft Project began while she was working as a senior scientist at the UW-Milwaukee Employment and Training Institute and led to an unexpected 15-year friendship with the late Mary Kellogg Rice, who as a college senior had served as the art director for the project.
