Craft a Nicho Box

Create a shadow box to use in celebrating Dia De Los Muertos

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by creating a nicho! Supplies and images for inspiration will be provided, including small decorations and paints to use in constructing a personal nicho box.

Dating back to the Spanish Colonial period, nichos are a type of folk art popular throughout Central and South America.  A nicho box, or simply nicho, is a three-dimensional display box, like a shadow box. Today, nichos can be created as shrines to important people or loved ones or used for protection or devotion. They can display political themes, scenes of everyday life, or images of saints or other deities. Many people include nichos as part of their Day of the Dead decorations and on ofrendas. In this program, you are invited to bring in photos and small items referencing important people, loved ones, or even pets, to serve as the central theme for your nicho.  We will provide supplies and images for inspiration, including small decorations and paints to use in constructing a personal nicho box.
